This study examines whether the frequency of innovation disclosure during 2014-2018 is associated with subsequent export intensity for Korean manufacturing firms. Innovation-related disclosures collected through the OpenDART API were matched with export and financial data from ValueSearch, yielding a final sample of 100 firms with at least one qualifying disclosure and complete data. Innovation Disclosure Frequency (IDF) is measured as total qualifying disclosures divided by the number of active disclosure years. Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression controls for 2018 export intensity, firm size, leverage and industry.
The results show a positive association between IDF and export intensity in 2019 (B=0.0199, p<.001). After accounting for the control variables, a one-unit difference in IDF is associated with a difference of approximately 1.99 percentage points in export intensity, while the addition of IDF raises R² by 0.0216. IDF, however, is a study-specific measure based on disclosure activity and does not directly capture innovation performance. The results thus indicate an association rather than a causal effect. By focusing on disclosure frequency within active years, this study offers a measure that differs from total disclosure volume and conventional measures of innovation activity.
