Waste treatment facilities, often regarded as locally undesirable land uses, are not randomly distributed across the landscape. This study employs exploratory spatial data analysis and spatial lag models to investigate the locational determinants of various facility categories and spatial dependence using 2023 facility location data from 226 Korean municipalities. The results reveal that incineration and landfill facilities exhibit stronger spatial clustering than recycling facilities. Facility siting was significantly associated with voter turnout and apartment density across both facility types. However, the proportion of the elderly population was significantly associated only with the siting of recycling facilities. Overall, the results indicate that waste treatment facility siting reflects nuanced differences in spatial processes across facility types, underscoring the need for more spatially informed siting policies.
