The purpose of this study was to analyze the spinal alignment patterns of rural residents according to their types of crop and specialty-crop cultivation and to propose an exercise program for the prevention of pain associated with spinal deformities. A total of 23 farmers from C City and N County were divided into two groups according to their primary agricultural activities: pear farming (n=11) and field farming (n=12). The spinal alignment characteristics of the two groups were comparatively analyzed, and the following conclusions were obtained.
There were statistically significant differences in the kyphotic angle and lordotic angle between the pear-farming and field-farming groups (p < .05). The field farmers may have developed excessive kyphosis as a result of performing agricultural work in a flexed or stooped posture for several decades. In contrast, pear farmers may have developed a more pronounced lumbar lordosis because their work frequently requires raising their arms overhead while tending to and harvesting pears over several decades. These findings suggest that long-term exposure to occupational postures associated with different types of agricultural work may be related to changes in spinal alignment and may contribute to the development of musculoskeletal pain and spinal deformities.
