The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of mental fatigue on knee joint position sense and dynamic postural control in healthy adult men. Thirty healthy men were recruited and randomly assigned to one of two intervention sequences (MF–CON or CON–MF) in a counterbalanced crossover design. Data from 27 participants who completed both experimental conditions were included in the final analysis. Participants completed both a mental fatigue condition (MF) and a control condition (CON). Mental fatigue was induced using a 45-min incongruent Stroop color-word task, whereas participants watched a low-cognitive-demand nature documentary during the control condition. Subjective mental fatigue was assessed using a 100-mm visual analog scale for mental fatigue (VAS-MF), and sustained attention was evaluated using the brief Psychomotor Vigilance Test (PVT-B). Knee joint position sense was assessed at 30°, 45°, and 60° of knee flexion using a CYBEX NORM isokinetic dynamometer, and dynamic postural control was evaluated using the Lower Quarter Y-Balance Test (YBT-LQ). Data were analyzed using two-way and three-way repeated-measures analyses of variance with Bonferroni-adjusted post-hoc comparisons. Following the mental fatigue task, VAS-MF increased and PVT-B reaction time was prolonged. Overall knee joint position absolute error also increased significantly, particularly at 45° and 60° of knee flexion. In contrast, no significant changes were observed in constant error, variable error, YBT-LQ normalized reach distances, or composite score. These findings suggest that mental fatigue impairs the accuracy of knee joint position sense without necessarily reducing dynamic postural control in healthy adult men.
