With rising income levels and shifting social structures, consumption patterns have moved beyond material satisfaction toward greater emphasis on quality of life, driving rapid growth in the home meal replacement (HMR) market. Middle-aged consumers, who combine economic capacity with a preference for convenience, are a core market segment. However, prior research on HMR selection attributes has predominantly focused on consumers in their 20s and 30s, leaving middle-aged consumers relatively underexplored. This study investigates the effects of HMR selection attributes (convenience, price, quality, variety) on consumption value (health-oriented value, situational value) and purchase intention, and the effect of consumption value on purchase intention, among middle-aged consumers with experience purchasing HMR products. A sample of middle-aged consumers (40s–60s) was selected from the Gwangju, Jeonnam, and Jeonbuk regions using convenience sampling. Data were collected through self-administered and online surveys from April 20 to May 20, 2026. Of 518 questionnaires distributed, 515 were collected, and after excluding incomplete responses, 500 were used for the final analysis. Results showed that price, quality, and variety of HMR selection attributes had significant positive effects on both health-oriented value and situational value, while convenience did not. Both health-oriented value and situational value had significant positive effects on purchase intention. Regarding the direct effects of selection attributes on purchase intention, convenience, price, and variety had significant positive effects, whereas quality did not, showing a contrasting pattern. These findings indicate that the effects of HMR selection attributes on consumption value formation and their direct effects on purchase intention differ depending on the nature of the attribute, extending existing theory to the middle-aged consumer segment. Based on these findings, HMR companies should improve convenience and communicate quality-related information separately to build consumer trust. These findings provide practical guidance for marketing to middle-aged consumers.
