This study examines the effects of four dimensions of AI literacy—Awareness, Usage, Evaluation, and Ethics—on career intention in the hotel and tourism industry among university students, with career decision-making self-efficacy as a mediator. Drawing on Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT), the study investigates how AI literacy dimensions relate to students’ career decision-making confidence and career intentions. As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into hospitality and tourism services, understanding these relationships is essential for developing effective educational strategies. Data were collected through a self-administered survey of university students enrolled in hotel and tourism courses incorporating generative AI. A total of 158 valid responses were analyzed using reliability analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, correlation analysis, and simultaneous multiple regression-based mediation analysis. All four AI literacy dimensions were entered simultaneously to assess their unique contributions while controlling for the other dimensions. Indirect effects were examined using bootstrapping. The results showed that Awareness and Usage had significant positive effects on career decision-making self-efficacy, whereas Evaluation and Ethics did not. Usage demonstrated the strongest direct effect on career intention, while Awareness influenced career intention only indirectly through career decision-making self-efficacy. Neither the direct nor indirect effects of Evaluation and Ethics were statistically significant after controlling for the other dimensions. These findings highlight the differentiated roles of AI literacy dimensions in career development and extend the application of SCCT to the AI-driven hospitality and tourism context. The study suggests integrating practical AI applications with career education to strengthen students’ career decision-making confidence and support their preparation for an increasingly AI-driven industry.
