Background: This study investigated the transplanting mechanism and evaluated the field performance of a double-crank five-bar transplanter engineered for plug-grown Angelica gigas seedlings.
Methods and Results: A three-dimensional model and closed-loop kinematic formulation were used to determine the displacement, velocity, acceleration, and trajectory of the planting end-effector. Simulation results indicated that the end-effector followed a smooth, repeatable elliptical path, with horizontal and vertical ranges of approximately 40 ㎝ and 30 ㎝, respectively, facilitating sequential seedling reception, transfer, soil insertion, release, and withdrawal. The velocity analysis focused on achieving a zero-speed transplanting condition, whereby the backward horizontal velocity of the planting mechanism offset the forward speed of the transplanter during insertion. Field tests were conducted using 60-day-old seedlings cultivated in 72-cell plug trays under controlled nursery conditions. The transplanter achieved an average transplanting rate of 88 seedlings per minute, yielding seedling damage and missed-planting rates of 3% and 4%, respectively. Although the mechanism demonstrated high operational capacity and satisfactory seedling-handling performance, increased vibration and occasional deviations in seedling posture occurred during high-speed operations. These issues were attributed to rapid changes in motion, linkage clearance, transmission backlash, and release-timing errors.
Conclusions: Further optimization of link dimensions, crank phase relationships, feeder synchronization, vibration isolation, and duckbill opening control is recommended to enhance planting accuracy, seedling uprightness, and operational reliability under field conditions.
