Background: This study evaluated the kinematic characteristics and field performance of a chain-clamp-type transplanter designed for bare-root Rehmannia glutinosa seedlings.
Methods and Results: A kinematic model was developed to analyze planting trajectory, velocity synchronization, and soil disturbance associated with the combined chain motion and forward travel of the transplanter. Field tests were conducted at a forward speed of 1.6 ㎞ h-1, transplanting rate of 72 seedlings min-1, and target planting depth of 40 ㎜. Under the selected kinematic condition (λ = 1.068), horizontal dragging near the planting position was reduced. The longitudinal and transverse dimensions of the soil opening ranged from 99.20 to 120.40 ㎜ and 31.67 to 36.53 ㎜, respectively. Compared with that in the conventional reference mechanism, the transverse opening width was reduced by 41.4% to 49.3%, yielding a soil disturbance area of 2430 ± 170 ㎜² per planting position. The missed-planting and seedling damage rates were 1% and 2%, respectively, whereas stable planting posture and relatively uniform depth were maintained.
Conclusions: The chain-clamp-type mechanism is suitable for mechanized transplanting of delicate bare-root medicinal crop seedlings. However, manual seedling feeding remained the primary limitation restricting further improvements in operational capacity.
