Background: Data on the growth, biomass allocation, and valerenic acid content of Valeriana fauriei under controlled cultivation conditions remain limited. This study compared the growth and biochemical characteristics of plants grown using aeroponic and soil-based cultivation in a smart farm.
Methods and Results: Plants were cultivated for 12 weeks at approximately 150 μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹ PPFD. Aeroponically grown plants received Yamazaki nutrient solution, whereas soil-grown plants were cultivated in a commercial growing medium and irrigated with water. Within-system repeated-measures ANOVA revealed significant temporal effects on plant height and SPAD values in both systems, and on NDVI, MCARI1, PRI, and SIPI in the aeroponic system. Branch numbers were higher in aeroponically grown plants. Mean shoot dry weight was higher under aeroponic cultivation than under soil cultivation (9.3 vs. 5.3 g·plant⁻¹), whereas mean root dry weight (2.4 vs. 4.5 g·plant⁻¹) and the root-to-shoot ratio (0.24 vs. 0.95) were lower. Valerenic acid concentrations in pooled root samples were 3,627 ± 191 and 1,437 ± 55 μg·g⁻¹ DW under aeroponic and soil cultivation, respectively. Each system comprised a single cultivation unit; therefore, differences between systems were descriptive and were not statistically tested.
Conclusions: Aeroponic and soil cultivation showed contrasting patterns of biomass allocation and root valerenic acid concentration. Further studies using replicated cultivation units, comparable nutrient conditions, and independent biological samples are required.
