Purpose : This study examines how Chinese Taijiquan was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and considers the experience and cultural significance of that process.
Methods : The study reviewed relevant literature and interviewed experts involved in the nomination. It examined Taijiquan’s cultural background, the nomination process, and its interpretation following inscription.
Results : Taijiquan’s roots in traditional Chinese culture, sustained government support, and the efforts of key individuals contributed to its inscription. Following UNESCO recognition, its cultural meaning was reinterpreted for an international audience.
Conclusion : The inscription underscores the importance of safeguarding Taijiquan and supports its international dissemination and cultural exchange through martial arts and sport.
