Purpose : Martial arts recognized as intangible cultural heritage constitute an important component of China’s cultural heritage and contribute to cultural confidence and cultural soft power. Originating in Mount Emei, Sichuan Province, Emei martial arts are included on China’s national intangible cultural heritage list. Their transmission, however, has long depended primarily on individual practitioners, limiting their wider dissemination and development. Addressing this issue requires a closer examination of practitioners’ motivations across different social roles and the identification of effective pathways for sustaining participation.
Methods : Drawing on the hierarchy of needs framework, this study examines the needs and motivations of students, employees, and retirees.
Results : The analysis suggests that these groups differ in their reasons for initiating and sustaining practice. Accordingly, the study proposes three interrelated pathways: improving practice environments, sustaining positive memories of participation, and maintaining engagement across transitions between life-stage identities.
Conclusion : These pathways aim to encourage broader participation in the learning and transmission of Emei martial arts and support their sustainable development.
