This study investigated how water temperature and stocking density affect oxygen consumption and energy expenditure of abalone, Haliotis discus hannai. Abalone averaging 98.1 mm shell length and 117.0 g body weight were examined in a closed recirculating respirometry system. Oxygen consumption rate (OCR) was measured at 10, 15, 20, and 25°C under stocking densities of 10, 20, and 40 kg m-3, with three replicates for each treatment. OCR increased with increasing water temperature from 10 to 20°C. However, at 25°C, OCR increased only slightly at 10 kg m-3 and decreased sharply by 74.5% and 80.9% at 20 and 40 kg m-3, respectively. OCR of abalone was significantly affected by water temperature, stocking density, and their interaction (P<0.0001). Q10 values also declined markedly above 20°C, particularly at high densities. Daily energy loss rate increased with water temperature and stocking density up to 20°C but decreased under 20 and 40 kg m-3 conditions at 25°C. These findings provide essential information for dissolved oxygen supply and density management of 82.8–109.6 mm abalone in land-based abalone aquaculture.
