Continuous monitoring of the marine environment is essential for stable production in laver (Pyropia spp.) aquaculture, which is highly susceptible to environmental fluctuations. This study evaluated the field applicability of a reagent-free, multi-wavelength optical sensor for monitoring nutrient conditions associated with discoloration risk in laver aquaculture and aimed to provide baseline data for the development of a real-time monitoring system. In laboratory tests, the sensor exhibited high linearity (R²=0.9997) over a nitrate-nitrogen concentration range of 0.02–1.00 mg/L, although uncertainty increased at the lowest tested concentration (0.02 mg/L). During field validation in coastal waters near laver farms, where seawater optical properties vary with salinity and turbidity, sensor measurements showed trends consistent with those obtained from laboratory analyses. Differences between the mean concentrations measured by the sensor and those determined by laboratory analyses ranged from 0.001 to 0.008 mg/L. These findings suggest that the optical sensor can serve as a supplementary tool for real-time monitoring of nutrient conditions associated with discoloration risk in laver aquaculture.
