초록· 키워드

"Sustainability" implies a balance between what we take from nature and what nature provides. It implies a longterm goal or value, but does not specify the process to move towards it. That is where ecologic design comes in. It includes the processes and tools by which we can move towards our goal of sustainability. The idea of ecologic design in embodied in a larger concept of two intersecting circles. The first is "Ecostructure -all the evolutionary processes of nature that support life on earth. The second is "Infrastructure" including all the humanly designed processes that support human societies such as buildings, roads, energy systems, communication systems, manufacturing of all kinds. In the Western worldview - since adopted by much of the developed world - infrastructure was developed without regard to its effects on ecostructure and the environmental crisis we face is the result of not considering the connection between the two. Ecologic design is the overlap between the two. The other key concept is to recognize the scale linking that occurs in both nature and human design and to find ways to link scales between the natural and the designed world. Ecodesign operates on five key principles: 1. Design begins by understanding the context of place. 2. Design proceeds by identifying the metrics we are most concerned with affecting. 3. Design can mimic nature, not in form but in process: "biomimicry" 4. Design honors and listens to the user. 5. If we follow and use these five steps not only will we transform society for the better, we will heal ourselves from our separation from nature.
