The current study examines acoustic variation conditioned by prosody in different speech styles. The patterns of variation in the acoustic expression of vowels and the role of prosodic factors in governing such variation are investigated with English vowels in two different speech styles, adult-directed speech (ADS) and child-directed speech (CDS). Target vowels are analyzed from Utterance-initial, -medial, and -final positions, with or without focal accent. Overall, both ADS and CDS show that the prosodically prominent contexts of focal accent and domain-final position induce the quantitative enhancement of the observed vowels. Focal accent in ADS is also revealed to condition qualitative enhancement in vowels observed from F1 and F2 variation. No supporting evidence is found for strengthening effects in utterance-initial vowels both in quality and in quantity. All in all, the effect of accent on acoustic measures is generally more distinctive and consistent than the effect of domain boundary. In comparison to ADS, the prosodic effects in CDS are found with reduced variation. The result is explained as a listener-sensitive speech style which is tuned to the one-word staged infants.
