Methanol extracts from 40 domestic medicinal plant species (31 families) were prepared and subjected to an in vitro screening test for their growth-inhibitory activities against Bifidobacterium bifidum, B. longum, B. adolescentis, Clostridium perfringens, and Escherichia coli, using spectrophotometric and paper disc agar diffusion methods under anaerobic conditions. The inhibitory activities were both bacteria and plant species dependent. In tests with 20 mg/disc, the extracts of Astragalus membranaceus roots, Cassia obtusifolia seeds, Cinnamomum cassia stems, Coptis japonica roots, Corydalis turschaninivii roots, Curcuma longa roots, Eucommia ulmoides leaves, Rhus chinensis galls, and Sinomenium acutum roots strongly inhibited the growth of C. perfringens. Strong growth-inhibitory effects against E. coli were observed from the extracts of C. obtusifolia and C. cassia, and moderate inhibitory activities were observed from the extracts of C. japonica, C. longa, E. ulmoides, R. chinensis, and S. acutum. The extracts of C. turschaninivii and S. acutum roots strongly inhibited the growth of B. adolescentis, but did not affect the growth of B. bifidum and B. longum. Intake of the domestic medicinal plants may be important in the prevention of human diseases caused by the intestinal microorganisms for altering the growth and composition of the intestinal bacteria and modulating the genesis of potentially harmful metabolites.
