This research aims to analyze the difference in the self-esteem and??achievement goal orientation among high school Taekwondo players depending upon their general characteristics and to??identify the factors in which self-esteem has an effect on achievement goal orientation. Questionnaires were??distributed to and collected from 422 high school Taekwondo players in South Korea and their answers were analyzed??by using such statistical test methods as independent t-test, one-way ANOVA and multiple regression analysis.??The following conclusions have been drawn from the analyses: First, there were partial differences in the self- esteem of high school Taekwondo players for all the factors depending upon their general characteristics. For personal??factors, boys had higher self-esteem than that of girls, while groups with longer careers exhibited higher??self-esteem than that of those with shorter careers. For physical ability factors, boys had higher self-esteem than that??of girls, while lower graders had higher self-esteem than that of higher graders, and groups with longer careers had??higher self-esteem than that of those with shorter careers. For intelligent ability factors, lower graders showed??higher self-esteem than that of higher graders. In addition, for friendship factors, girls had higher self-esteem than??that of boys, groups with longer careers had higher self-esteem than that of those with shorter careers, and groups??with longer daily exercise time exhibited higher self-esteem than that of those with shorter daily exercise time.??Second, there were differences in the achievement goal orientation of high school Taekwondo players for career and??daily exercise time depending upon their general characteristics. Groups with longer careers had higher levels of??both the task orientation and ego orientation than those in groups with shorter careers, while groups with shorter daily??exercise time exhibited higher ego orientation than in those with longer daily exercise time. Finally, personal and??friendship factors of self-esteem had positive effects on task orientation, and physical and intellectual abilities had??positive effects on ego orientation.
