The purpose of this article is to contribute to the comprehension of the development of rhotic sounds by presenting a comparison of the evolution of the ‘r’ realizations in American English (AE) and in Brazilian Portuguese (BP). The comparison appears pertinent since even when the languages belong to different language families, the rhotic inventory includes sounds that result from similar processes (such as retroflexion and vocalization of ‘r’). The investigation starts with a summary of previous studies including Barry (1997), Erickson (2008) and Magnuson (2007). Additionally, to develop on the evolution of the rhotic sounds in AE and BP, the examination discusses and compares diachronic aspects, checks the sociolinguistic continuum of presence/absence of rhoticity in AE and in BP, and enumerates the ‘shapes’ that the variable /r/ has assumed in both languages. Finally, since the investigation assumes that the evolution of the realizations may have followed similar trajectories in AE and BP, it proposes two sequences of changes that may explain the transformations that the rhotic sounds have gone through in both languages.
