Consumer preference to precast-concrete prefabricated apartments
severely impaired due to the malfunction and poor performance of
early examples. Despite recent technological and performance
improvement, this biased disposition at the consumers' side remains
and impedes the recent concerted efforts of the government to
facilitate the prefabrication technology. Following the model
of quasi-experimentation, along with the instrumental example
of the Margulis' Operation Breadthrough consumer attitude study
and the Illionis HR&D's satisfaction model, two pairs of matched
conventional and prefabricated housing were selected, over 1000
residents and management staff were surveyed to investigate
possible differences in performance and resident satisfaction.
The conclusion was that the satisfaction was associated with intial
constrictrion quality and subsequent management but not with
prefabrication, and that there were no significant differences
in aspects of building performance between conventional and
prefabricated housings.
