The purpose of this paper is to explore the architectural
design processes of two subjects with different design practice.
An experiment, which was based on the theory of Eastman, Goel
and Pirolli, is conducted to collect sketches and analyze protocol.
From the protocol analysis, the characteristics of design
processes of each subject are examined as follows. The subject
with design practice proceeds design development by visual
information and design experience, while the other subject
without design practice prefers to use imagery behavior and
previous spatial experience.
The primary constraint of the design problem is decided at the
early stage of the design in both subjects. It is based on
personal experience of each subject and has great influences
on the final solution.
As a result, design process reveals different characteristics
depending on the degree of designer's practical experience.
