The current trend of mixed-use development(MXD) appears
to be showing the appearance colliding with original
theoretical promise. Based upon this viewpoint, this
paper attempted to extract and re-establish the architectural
planning and developmental direction of MXD,through reviewing
the theoretical assumption of MXD and focusing on the concept
of neighborhood which is considered to have constructed the
framework of the orginal MXD theory. For this purpose,the
theory of Jane Jacobs,a major contributor to frame the MXD
theory,was analyzed,and some of the appropriate representative
examples were reviewed. The results of this study are as follows.
(1) The fundamental premise of MXD can be regarded as the urbanity
which can be interpreted as diversity in urban life,and this this
diversity is well-obtained by the concept of neighborhood.
(2) This concept of nighborhood is reinforced by the urban road,
where the retails and small shops are arranged.In this point,how
to introduce and design the urban in MXD project is clearly a
crucial aspect that revitalize the urban life.
(3) Therefore,the developmental direction of MXD should be the one
that accentuates and focuses on this urbanity,especially the
concept of neighborhood linked with the small shops.
