The orthopantogram taken from TMD patients were analyzed whether they had vertical asymmetry of mandibular ramus using Habet's formula. Among them, 37 patients with asymmetry were selected from subjects for asymmetry group and 43 patients without asymmetry for symmetry group. The difference in treatment outcome were studied between two groups and the results were as follows.
1. There were no significant difference in duration of illness and duration of treatment between asymmetry and symmetry group.
2. There was no significant difference between asymmetry and symmetry group according to diagnosis.
3. In the comparison of variable parameters presenting the extent of TMD symptoms before treatment, only the severity of pain was significantly higher in asymmetry group than symmetry group. After treatment, there were no significant differences in variables; pain, noise, limitation of opening and maximum comfortable opening.
4. Considering the changes on joint noise as an objective parameter after treatment, there was no significant difference between asymmetry and symmetry groups.
5. Between asymmetry and symmetry groups, there was no difference in employment of conservative treatment protocol to obtain the similar treatment outcome.
Based on this study, it can be concluded that conservative, reversible treatment resulted in same outcome for TMD patients having asymmetry of mandibular ramus.
