If Koreans and Japanese want to cooperate each other and have intimate relationship between them, they each have to give up self-interest for their own country and restore the trust between them. In order to restore the trust between them, Koreans and Japanese need to come to an agreement on their understanding of history.
First, the people of Korea and Japan need to come to an agreement on the understanding about the history and culture of the two countries. Koreans proudly believe that their culture is superior to Japanese culture in the pre-modern times. Japanese are proud that their country has been more powerful than Korea and has influenced Korea since ancient times. Because of the spirit of self-respect for their countries, the people of Korea and Japan are apt to feel resentment toward the other country, and it is an obstacle to good relationship between them. Therefore, it is desirable for Koreans and Japanese to understand the history of the other country and also to respect the culture of the other country.
Second, the people of Korea and Japan need to come to an agreement on the understanding about Japan's invasion of Korea. Japanese rightists think it was natural that Japan would invade Korea to defend her country from the threat of the powers in the past. They maintain that the Sino-Japanese War was to help the independence and the modernization of Korea, and that Russo-Japanese War was to protect Korea, and that Japan's annexation of Korea was carried out with the intention of securing peace in Asia. It could follow logically that Japanese can bring about war from now on, if the need arises, for their country. It will be a right way to pursue anti war and peace for Japanese to recognize that Japan's invasion of Korea was a wrongful deed, even though it can be understood as a product of the times.
Third, the people of Korea and Japan need to come to an agreement on the understanding about Japan's colonial rule on Korea. Since the end of the 2nd World War, Japanese politicians have maintained that Japan's colonial rule over Korea helped Koreans. Also Japanese intellectuals have emphasized that Korea was modernized under the Japan's colonial rule. It would be a fact that Korea was modernized more or less under the Japan's rule. However, modernization cannot justify colonial rule. Japanese must realize they caused sufferings of Korean people and the ruins of Korean culture. Also, they have to criticize their colonial rule as a wrongful deed on humankind.
Fourth, the people of Korea and Japan need to come to an agreement on the understanding about the liquidation of past problems between the two countries. After the end of the 2nd World War, Germany rejected the Nazism and regenerated as a new country pursuing peace, and German people left the legacy of Nazism and were born again as new people morally. This means the definite liquidation of past problems in Germany. After all, the people of neighboring countries admitted the German people as a new friend. However, since the end of the 2nd World War, Japanese have tried to think of the deeds of their invasion as the deeds of patriotism. Therefore people of neighboring countries have criticized the attitude of Japan. Japanese must criticize the deeds of past militarism and reject putting any power into the new militarism. That will be the pertinent way for the liquidation of past problems and mutual prosperity.
