There is no one who has the problematic characteristics in GaeHwa period's novelist than Lee In Gik. His novel [Teas of Blood] has been evaluated as the narrative which assists the colonization of Choseon, and which reflects the oppressive aspect of the modern and the problem of the political unconscious. I intend to read this novel in two ways. First, I will see this novel as the colonial discourse. Second, I will discuss this novel's narrative characteristics.
First, [Tears of Blood] shows the unfortunate destiny of one woman during about ten years, and the new consciousness about marriage. In addition to, this novel reveals the consciousness which opposes to the feudal system. However, we must notice that this novel defends the dicourse of solidarity between East Asian countries very positively, which is changed in quality to the colonial discourse. If we overlook this point, we can't explain the modern novel's characteristics that has close relationship with the colonialism [Tears of Blood] is evaluated as the one of our modern novel's origin. But we must not overlook that this novel made statement that period's political discourse, the solidarity between East Asian countries. Of course the substance of this political discourse is colonial. The discourse of solidarity between East Asian countries, which had been deployed from late in the 19th century, has the problem Because that opinion projects the joint with the imperial Japan without agony about the birth of nation-state. The discourse of solidarity between East Asian countries implies the contributes that rationalize the colonization of Choseon, even though the contents differ from each massmedia. To be regret, the intellectuals at that time who discussed the solidarity between East-Asian countries couldn't recognize that their thinking was able to rationalize the logic of imperial Japan.
Second, I intend to observe about writer's binary oppositional thinking which is represented imaginatively in [Tears of Blood], That is, he looked Choseon as the Other, the colony which had to be managed, and both Japan and America as the Subject, the origin of civilization which raised the colonial people. The narrative characteristics of Lee In Gik's work is based on the binary oppositional thought which divides the world with the empire and the outside. That is, this novel expresses coherently the relationship between empire and Choseon corresponds to the relationship between the center and the border, and the 'difference' between them can't be sealed.
