This article aims at clarifying the meaning of the ambivalence in the process of the negotiation between 'Jung' appeared in Lee Guang-Su's short stories and the colonial discourse. 'Jung' exposed from early short stories is constituted through the imitating of Japanese colonial discourse. Simultaneously it acts on a scale causing the dissolution to the colonial discourse. 'Jung' is to emphasize the self-consciousness of the forming the self as well as the individuality of the awareness. Namely it is said as a expropriation of modern western civilization. This is operated on an element composing the modern literature of colonized Chosun(조선), flowing from Japan.
'Jung' is the transplanted concept through the civilization of the colonial country. But it produces new meaning from negotiating with the culture of the colonized. 'Jung' accomplishes the moral culture, in other words, and shows a road that creates new culture in the Chosun. In this point, 'Jung' gives birth to the difference against Japanese colonial discourse which proclaims modernizing and wholeism.
Lee Guang-Su's short stories indicates that the pursuit of Love and the relealse of an individual.「To My Young Friend」(어린 벗에게),「The Grief of the Boy」(소년의 비애) seek after love of an individual and desire eagerly an free life. Lee Guang-Su criticized confucianism because it was blocking the revelation of the 'Jung'. This reveals the difference between Japanese colonialism and his viewpoint. The confucianism in 1910's misused for the Japanese national discourse through『Maeilsinbo』press. Lee Guang-Su, however, criticized the different way that was related 'Jung', compared with Japanese national discourse.
Lee Guang-Su's early short stories show the human who chases 'Jung' as the core of human idealism. 'Jung' is revealed as ‘the spontaneity of an individual' and 'an awareness of the personality' with the mimicry of the colonial discourse. Nevertheless, 'Jung', 'the civilizing discourse' causes the dissolution to the colonial discourse since it gives rise to the difference in the process of the negotiation with the colonial discourse that is made by material civilization. This situation is not showing to go to self-colonized process, but operating on a scale making new culture in colonized Chosun. Finally 'Jung' has a role of the inner drive causing dissolution to Japanese colonial discourse.
