The women's Lifetime-Gasa which had been written and transmitted by the Yangban women is a subject of this thesis. In women's Lifetime-Gasa, the structure and it's meaning are deeply discussed especially.
The women's Lifetime-Gasa can be divided into two types according to the narrative structure in the works. The first is the open structure which has no closure in story. The second is the closed structure which has the closure.
Most of women's Gasa have the open structure. They are composed of 'comfort - conflict - frustration - expectation'. They are also divided into two types. The first shows the expectation for the next world and the second the expectation for the present world. The first type is based on the dualistic worldview, but the second one is on the unitary worldview.
The Gasa showing the closed structure are very rare. They shows the passage from the virtual narration to the fictional narration. They are composed of 'comfort - conflict - frustration - the attempt for the solution - solution'. They have, therefore, similar structures with the folk ballads and the classic novels. The closed structure reveals the accidental, causal and the fictive conclusions. They represent the social structure that oppresses the women and also reveals the women's consciousness that supposes it unfair.
The Gasa which have the compound are very close to the novel. Their structures are similar with the closed structures. They show the consciousness of Yangban and Seomin simultaneously. They, however, gave the conservative consciousness as the Yangban class substantially. Women's Gasa, therefore, belongs to the Yangban's Gasa, even though it takes the expression technique from the Seomin's Gasa.
This study made the significant progress in paying close attention to the form of Gasa and in introducing the method of analysis which have been used in the narrative literature to Gasa which is the didactic literature. It may, however, have some problems to generalize the results because the subject is inclined to the narrative Gasa More precise research on the correspondence of those results with the content, the comparison of it with the other genres, the status and the value of it in the literary history, therefore, should be continued.
