The purpose of this longitudinal study was to examine the prediction of mothers' parenting style and children's attachment with mothers on socio-emotional competence. The subjects were 55 toddlers and their mothers who participated in first study(1999). Mother's parenting style and attachment security with mothers were assessed in time1(1999) when children were 2 years old. After 1 year later, children's socio-emotional competence was evaluated by mothers using a questionnaire in time2(2000).
Mothers' parenting style predicted children's social competence and anxiety-withdrawal. Children with mothers who have authoritative and permissive parenting style tended to exhibit more socially competent and showed less internal behavior problems than children with mothers who have authoritarian and neglecting parenting style. Children's socio-emotional competence at age 3 was partly predicted by attachment security with mothers. Specifically, children with secure attachment showed less external behavior problems(anger-aggression) than children with insecure attachment.
