This study is designed to research the style consciousness and literary characteristics of Suck-jeong Lee, Jeong-jick which were presented in the first edition of Yeonsucksanbangmijeongko and Suckjeongjip . Suck-jeong indicated that the sentences should be written on the base of ‘the Principle (道)’ and the literary creation without the Principle would be ostentatious or frivolous. Suck-jeong, moreover, put stress on the priority of ‘the Literature’, to the result that he perceived the Literature was the supreme thing in the world.
This thesis summarizes the literary characteristics of Suck-jeong’s writings as three aspects, which are the followings: the classical characteristics of his sentences, the composition rule of ‘the Principle’, and the natural aesthetics of expression. Suck-jeong, as a writer of the classics, left many literary works with a model pattern and made a concrete theory of the classical writing. His literary creation had the characters of model style of classics in its contents, rhetorics, and composition pattern.
Suck-jeong systemized the theory of literature based on his style consciousness. In particular, he dealt with the issue of ‘the Principle and Rule(理法)’ which had been the point of dispute since many generations. He tried to implant ‘the Natural Fondness(天趣)’ into the theoretical structure of poem and prose. He, remarkably, pointed out with emphasis that ‘the Nature’ could not be fulfilled by itself and should be apprehended by learning.
