The Korean Government has decided to implement the United States 1983 vehicle emission standards (exhaust and evaporative) for their domestic vehicles starting July 1, 1987. Gasoline and engine oil composition can impact the field performance of emission control systems. The United States experience since the 1975 Model year implementation of catalytic exhaust emiss­ion controls will be used as the bases for reviewing the impact of fuels and lubricants on field performance of emission control system. Specifically : high gasoline vapor pressure can incre­ase exhaust, evaporative and refueling hydrocarbon emissions ; lead and manganese antiknock compounds can increase engine hydrocarbon emissions ; lead, and phosphorus from engine oil, can poison exhaust system oxygen sensors and catalytic conver­ters ; sulfur can result in foul smelling exhaust gas ; alcohols blended in gasoline can have varied effects on exhaust emiss­ions, but they will increase evaporative emissions ; ethers, specifically methyltertiary butyl ether (MTBE), should not effect either exhaust or evaporative emissions ; gasoline detergent additives can keep fuel systems clean and thus minimize impacts on exhaust emissions. The history of the presence of these materials in U.S. unleaded gasoline and engine oil will be reviewed, and recommendations will be made regarding Korean unleaded gasoline.
