This paper gives a survey of the broad variety of alternative fuels known for many years or brought to notice just recently. The range of fuels includes alcohols like methanol and ethanol, gaseous hydrocarbon fuels like compressed natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas as well as the quite new fuel dimethyl ether. The combustion related properties are compared for the different fuels and suitable combustion systems are described. For the most important alternative fuels of today the development of dedicated combustion systems is discussed.
Special reference is made to the emission levels of heavy duty and passenger car applications. Alternative fuels are clean fuels, the exhaust gases being virtually smoke free. The Nox emission is also very low.
The technical challenges related to the use of alternative fuels in Diesel and Otto cycle engines can be solved. Their introduction will depend mainly on legislation in regard to emission limits and incentives for manufacturer and customer.
