This study examines the life and activities of Choi Deok-Jee, who was concerned with the issues of woman, nation, and religion etc., and was involved in the national movement and movement against visit to the shrine during Japanese colonial rule from 1910 to 1945. Of many studies published up to now, most have focused on men's activities during that period. Rarely have there been the studies on women's, although they also maintained various opinions and took active parts. This paper therefore research the background of Choi Deok-Jee's commitment to the national movement and examine the activities on which she concretely placed focus, criticizing that most of studies have concerned the activities of men.
Choi Deok-Jee participated in the national movement under the influence of a special regional characteristic of Gilyajeong(길야정) at Tongyeong(통영) where she grew up. Through her encounter with Christianity, she was aware of the national consciousness and had relation with some nationalist figures. After studying at Jinmyung Academy at Tongyeong and Uisin Woman's School at Masan, she took active parts as one of the leaders of the national movement at Tongyeong in 1920s.
Afterwards, affected by Lee Young-Do's claims that the Christian church should reform its corruptions and irregularities of hierarchy and return to the original belief of christianity, she entered Pyeongyang Woman's High Bible School. Here she established her own opinion of the nation and the Christian belief by making thorough studies of Christianity, and then joined the movement against visit of the shrine.
The reason why she took active parts in the movement against visit of the shrine was because she believed that the national independence was to follow God's will Based on religious grounds, she participated in the independence movement from Japanese colonial rule to realize God's will as it was Ultimately it was owing to the power of the Christian belief that constantly she could commit to the national movement from 1920s to 1945.
