This thesis is a study of fashion and paintings about Inter-Mode of the late 19th century when the fashion as an art made a mutual inspiration with the paintings.
After middle 19th century, fashion started to be understood as new concept called art, soon got the recognition as a symbolic worth representing modernity of contemporary art, and finally came to achieve Inter-Mode with paintings.
The effect of the Industrial Revolution led the middle class who enjoyed wealth and social right to activate the association with fashion and paintings because the midcle dass who possessed the economic power tried to their own taste for an art throughout the consumption on portrait and fashion. With these circumstances, Haute Couture founded by Worth consolidated the position and the pride in art, and owing to the critics who approved fashion as a formative art concerned with field of paintings, fashion was being watched more and more. Also publications made it possible to have
mass production and got a role of settling the fashion as an art to the whole society. All the things raised fashion to the range of art and eventually the border of fashion and art has disappeared.
As a result of studying the Inter-Mode of fashion and paintings of the late 19th century and looking over the mutual
inspiration of fashion and paintings on the masterpiece, we reached the oonclusion as followings.
Rrst, portrait artists' understanding, which is an artistic worth of fashion, became a source of inspiration for the image expression in paintings. The oostumes presented by artists to create model's elegant image have formed the contemporary fashion mode, and also fashion as an art has increased.
Second, the expression of fashion made in the nude paintings. Especially, with the realistic style of painting, not the nude of pertect body seen before in the painting which has a theme of myth, but the realistic and progressive nude needed new view point to understand fashion. In the pursuit of realism, with nude paintings, the costumes undressed gave nude the realism, and the necessity enlarged the interest on modern oostumes.
Third, fashion illustration produced by artists of the late 19th century moved the fashion mode and increased the fashion
as an art.
Rnally, in the oontinuous circulation of fashion and art of the late 19th century, the paintings, which focused on parisiennes expressed them, showed the ideal beauty and the newest mode, and the same time, parisiennes in the paintings retooked a part of fashion leader in reality.
As being shown above, fashion and art of 19th century have made a pertect Inter-Mode into two directions, and the worth and recognition of fashion as an art have increased. The recognition on fashion has changed and developed depending on the artists.
Portrait painters, who are in social drdes, and designer painters took the advantage of mass narcissism and ooncreted the illusion with fashion for the model to look beautiful. They became modern artists, gave the contemporary designers like Worth the inspiration of design, and completed a mode of fashion and art successfully.
Tendency of Plein-air and expression of Inti mist shown in the Impressionism artists can be analyzed with the same purpose of nude's revolution, and their keen sense beyond simple description on ex1emal aspect brought modernity to the fashion in paintings.
We acknowledged that fashion chosen by artist as an element of new art gave an inspiration to the oontemporary fashion designer, and the mode at that time didn't loose the worth and it has been the source of inspiration even to modern
