The goal of this study is to research the tendency of sensory language to form sensory clusters in certain portions of the Bible, thereby Lamentations 4:1-10 has been selected to analyze not only sensory clusters but to observe the interaction between sensory terms and how they affect each other. Sensory cluster is a tenn for certain portions where various sensory words are used, creating a compression of sensory images. Poems that utilize such clusters not only convey vivid images but are easily remembered by the audience. Sensory clusters are often made up of sensory language that is less well used, such as touch, taste or smell language. These are used to affect each other, thereby heightening the senses. An example of a sensory cluster is Song of Songs 1:14, where a short phrase of poetry shows 3 examples of sight language, 2 of smell, and 2 of taste language, allowing different senses to affect each other and produce a heightening effect and giving a fuller expression of the love shared by a couple. Lamentations 4:1-10 is a typical song of lament, and is also constructed as an alphabetical song. From the beginning, this song contains strong images and sensory language, especially verses 3-4 and 9-10 which contain sensory clusters. Sensory language is used a total of 59 times, among which 46% are sight language, 22% are taste, 19o/(j are touch, 8% are smell and 5% are sound language. A particular point of interest is that taste and touch language, which among the sensory languages are expressed at the closest proximity to the body, make up a large 41% of the total. This shows that the senses expressed in chapter 4 are exceptionally strong. The background of Lamentations Chapter 4 is the fall of Jerusalem, and therefore filled with starvation and death. Chapter 4 especially uses the image of a starving mother and newborn child to lament the state of Jerusalem. Among the sensory clusters of Chapter 4, those shown in verses 3-4 are analyzed to contain a sight background of thirst and dryness and hunger, similar to the desert, and the central taste language of water, milk and bread shown in verse 4 are all present. Especially of importance is that among the sensory clusters in verses 3-4, sound, scent, touch and taste language are expressed as being impossible to feel. This, ironically, allows each sense to be heightened. The sensory clusters in verses 9-10 use special language to express how touch and taste language coexist within a single tenD. Above all, the image of mothers in a beseiged fortress eating their own children out of extreme hunger is central in these sensory clusters. The sensory analysis method, which interprets the Bible centered upon sensory clusters and the interaction of various sensory terms, is an effective method of analysis that heightens the message of the Bible and allows it to be vividly felt. It is also relatively easy to be utilized by non-professional Bible interpreters, allowing larger possibilities for widespread use.
