The recent study of leadership focuses on enabling others to become
leaders, rather than on influencing others. The so-called super-leadership is characterized as "being a model, showing vision(establishing a goal), self-compensation and positive thinking, ete." The problem of leadership in the Old Testament is to be approached first by understanding human beings. The Bible describes human beings as persons who can decide their own problems and have responsibilities for their deeds. The Bible presupposes that human beings have the abilities to set future plans and to accomplish them.
The history of Israel can be classified by six periods: nomads, judges, David-Solomon, the Deuteronomic Reformation, the second Temple and Hellenism. All through these stages, various types of leaders appeared. The type of leadership in each period is discussed. The serving of others by leaders was crucial for leadership in the Old Testament and in Israelite society. Through their sacrifices and services, leaders fulfilled the goals of the community.
In conclusion, "showing vision" and "being a model for serving others" are suggested to be the most important requirements in the Old Testament and in the history of Israel. Leaders in each period of Israelite history raised the vision of their times from the desire of the people. The accomplishment of visions had been realized with the leaders' life of serving.
