The purpose of this paper is to find possible Christian educational methods to prevent and correct Internet addictions, especially for Internet addicted Korean youth. More specifically, Internet addiction will be defined further with existing detection patterns. Circumstances and data of current phenomena of Internet addiction in Korean youth will be introduced For Christian educational approaches, three possible educational methods will be suggested: Christian value education as a solid prevention, Internet media education for purposes of immunization, and correctional education with family therapy for those who have already become addicted. Code regulation will be discussed for supervising addictive Internet environment.
The term Internet addiction describes a compulsive disorder experienced by individuals who spend to much recreational time in Internet related activities. They become impaired in important arenas such as study, work, family, social pursuita, and self-care. Three categories of causes of Internet addiction: Individual, Social, and Environmental factors could be summarized from preceding research on Internet addiction in Korean youth.
Based upon three causes of Internet addiction in Korean youth, three categories of Christian educational approaches could be suggested: Two preventive approaches and one correctional approach. First, for fundamental and central foundation to manage the Internet usage, Christian Value Education and budget restriction may be suggested. Another one possible solution may be the use of programmatic interventions that focus on the developmental difficulties that influence excessive Internet usage. Internet Media Education between parents and teens with family therapy will be suggested. Finally, another suggested solution would be the adoption of code regulation and a monitoring system. The Cold Turkey strategy also might be introduced for correcting it successfully.
Future research should focus on developing effective Christian recovery programs. Continuing new research is essential to better understand the underlying motivation of Internet addiction. As more research on the topic is done, it is hoped that other more effective solutions and suggestions will be realized. To solve the Internet addiction problem, the Christian communities should corporate, take the effort, and the pay cost.
