Is the transmission of faith through Catechism still useful in nowadays changed world? The task of this thesis lies on how the European Church adjusts its traditional transmission of faith in order to cope with the change of the present age.
The way how the model of transmission of faith is been changing in Europe will be analyzed by following three questions in this thesis: Which type of pedagogy do they use in Catechism? Which is the content of religious education, Christian faith or Christian values? By which agents of transmission is it handed down?
Since the late second century, the 'Ancient Catechism' has been educated to the adult by the type of 'initiation' which make one person into a church member by baptism. In the 16th, the 'Catechism' has possessed the character of systematic education for children by the Reformation. But this catechism model by Luther and Calvin taught catechumens by making them memorize christian dogmas, the faith was passed on them by learning the knowledge and the truth.
In the 19th, the Christian Education has applied experimental character by 'Sunday School Movement'. It divided children into several groups by ages considering children's development and made them learn biblical texts, experience it by playing.
Since the post-l960 period, Christianity was not the only one religion and the society was changed into cultural pluralism in Europe. Consequently the Church became critical. The Catechesis begins to enchant 'autonomy' to the young, which helps them choose their own religious journey. So the past 'inculcation method' of pedagogy, in which teachers who teaches dogmatic knowledges just teaching and students just learning was avoided.
The new catechism model called 'Indirect communication' recognizes catechumens as people of desires and needs and human beings who have existential questions. Especially, Baumann emphasized that christian doctrines could be meaningful only when the young ask about biblical traditions in their own contexts, and he proposed to apply' Atelier' as the educational activities in Catechesis.
This new Catechesis model is practiced at Evangelical Reformed Church in Switzerland as a "Project for EVA" from 1995 to 2004.
On the other hand, the influence on religious convictions in present is changing in Europe. The 'Family' in which parents has handed down their christian faith to their sons and daughters relating deeply to the 'Church' and 'school' does important part as an agent of transmission of faith which constructs religious identity of the young and teaches Christian values to them with the 'media' of this contemporary society while there's a little distance between family and church today.
