When we talk about the early history of catholic church in Korea, it is impossible without discussing Father Maubant, who was the first western missionary to enter the forbidden kingdom, Choseon. Nevertheless remain only few records about his pastoral activity before and after the persecution of the year 'Kihae'(CE. 1839). This article seek to give an outline of Father Maubant's biography and activities as a :french catholic missionary by tracing the sporadical fragments found in various historical documents and his personal or official letters, pastoral reports collected in the archives of the 'la Societe des Missions-Etrangeres de Paris' situated in the Rue du Bac.
This article, first, sums up the circumstances of the establishment of the diocese Choseon, strictly speaking a kind of vicarius Apostolicus, and its assignment to the french missionary orders, La Societe des Missions-Etrangeres de Paris. Because that was direct factor to explain the reason why :french missionaries as Father Maubant visited what was called the pagan Choseon kingdom. Then, 'it traces Father Maubant's birth, growth and education in France through his biographical sources. After making an outline about the whole activities of Father Maubant who had entered Korea in 1836 to be martyred in 1839, it treats his annual travel for the catholic brotherhood communities in various regions from 1836 to 1839.
However we cannot but admit that there is still much deficiencies for the whole reconstruction of the details of Father Maubant's administrative travels. Moreover we do not
know his concrete conducts in the korean catholic communities, and his influences and contributions on the korean catholic church. So the study of Father Maubant would be extended to the analysis of the documents of his contemporaty colleagues, Bishop Imbert and Father Chastan.
