Today the role of father is considered on a par with that of mothers in the home. Full participation by the father is critical in the modern family in childrearing. For a child's faith development, communication and love as a foundational relationship between fathers and their children can only be developed by the father's taking an active role from the very earliest days of a child's life. Because love and communication are intrinsic, there is par amount value to love and to communication in the Christian life. Communication includes both the dimensions of presence and of cooperation. Love includes the implications of affection, intimacy, and communication. Fathering requires an understanding of a child's psychological as well as physical and spiritual development and for the best result this must begin by knowing and participating in a child's care when that child is under two months of age. Fathers can help an infant develop imagination processes. In religious faith, fathers can help a child see the world as a meaningful whole, and feeling oneself to be a meaningful part of whole. The core self, which is the generalization of interactions and construction of the evoked companion, needs the origins both in ritual and in the sense of the numinous. Achieving strong parental bonding at the substantive phase of infantile selfhood needs "the genesis of shared meanings" and "the birth of the sense of the soul." Language and symbols in the emergence of the verbal self needs to develop the origins of symbolization in faith and in religious participation. Fathers must develop these complex relationships with the new child because both parents should become caregivers in the ordinary rituals of daily life.
