WEI-JIN is the important turning point in the Chinese history. It comes under politically and ideologically. The new stream of age which is called "Qing Tan: Pure conversations" brought the change of the value, which shake the existing order. This "Qing Tan" ideology made individualism, sumptuous moods, epicures and a taoist hermit with supernatural powers ideology prosperous and at last it brought dissipated life style and the corruption of morals.
Opposed to this new ideology, another movement which try to restore the rraditional, confucian value order happened. To make short of a long story, it can be defined that WEI-JIN was the period which load various miscellaneous goods together. In this new stream, there were a number of changes in the value and the art of living of the government officials Si Ma's usurpation process from Chao Wei dynasty was very cruel. To say nothing of the before royal household, huge number of the court minister and government officials were sacrificed. There were almost no government officials who were alive. The few who were survived couldn't help shivering in the insecurity and fear. According to this atmosphere,
it happened new value and way of living.
some government officials used alcoholic drinks as the way to live in that curbulent days. Their inordinate drinking behavior was the way to avoid the anger which will come to them someday. They also made games of tile government using drunken situation veiledly.
The scholar-officials in the WEI-JIN were indifferent to the politics consciously. So, they didn't want to be the government officials. It is the traditional concept that scl10lars study and become the officials and outstretch their great ambition and make the salvation of the country. But they were very cautious and prudent. Furthermore, they didn't want to be the a person of exalted rank. Though everyone adored the high rank, there were the dangers enough to threat the high rank.
Another important way of living was not to intervene in the political things. Even though the dynasty could be placed in peril, it was the best choice not to inrervene. This kind of tendency was the one of tile reasons that there were so many turnovers of political power in WEI-JIN dynasty.
The scholar-officials in the WEI-JIN considered the home education as the important way to protect them and their family in this changable period. So, they tried to show the way of living in this turbulent days to their descendants.
There was a surprising the accumulation of capital in the way of living of the scholar-officials in the WEI-JIN. It seems opposite to their thought "Make empty mind without worldly selfishness." The object of this was not to pile up their wealth bin to forget the worldly things and to satisfy. The tremendous piling up their wealth and excessive stinginess is related with Xuan Xue. To live free from worldly cares and a life of proud loneliness, the wealth is a essential factor. It is impossible to pursue the metaphysical philosophy with om economical basis. Only a nobleman could be blessed with the seclusion, a flight from reality,
naturalism, a principle of noninterference and they could enjoy to drink alcohol whenever they want and make the poems when they have free time. These things were impossible for the common people ro do. This is the reason that Xuan Xue in rhe WEI-JIN dynasty were all involved in the landed class. So, they didn't object to the landed class system and the private ownership of the huge land, though they insisted that they be taoist hermit with supernatural powers.
The natural ideology which Xuan Xue insisted gave rise to silent,
clam, and living in easy retirement life style. This stream pJa}'ed an important role to develop the noble arl such as calligraphy, paintings.
Namely, the scholar-officials in the WIE-JIN dynasty was prepating the Nan-Bei dynasty trying to find a way out of new value and the secret of success in life under the new academic tradition.
