The purpose of the present paper is to review the following three topics: Firstly, are the syntactic structures of the following two coordinate sentences, (1ㄱ) and (1ㄴ), same or different? Secondly, what position does a conjunctive phrase(=CONJP) in Korean take in syntactic structure? Thirdly, what distinction does a multi-tiered subordinate sentence have? We have reached a following conclusion after a full discussion of the first problem; that is to say, the syntactic structure of (1ㄱ) is that a propositional sentence and a completed sentence conjoined by the propositional sentence is governed by a tense morpheme as shown in "[ [_TP[농부가 밭을 갈고 어부가 고기를 잡]았]다.]". In this construction, the sentence in question has a semantic distinction that the substantial content of a preceding clause and a following clause is recognized synchronically, not separately, by a speaker. Contrary to this, the syntactic structure of (1ㄴ) is that a pre-complete sentence and a completed sentence conjoined by the pre-complete sentence is governed by a sentence-ending morpheme; i.e. the structure where a tense morpheme is allotted to a preceding and a following clause separately, as shown in “[ [_TP₁[농부가 밭을 갈았]고 _TP₂[어부가 고기를 잡았] ]다.]" In this construction, the sentence in question has a semantic distinction that the substantial content of a preceding clause and a following clause is recognized separately by a speaker. As for the second problem, we have concluded as follows: The syntactic structure of a subordinate conjunctive sentence is that a preceding clause is layered lower than a following clause as shown in (24). The conjunctive phrase in question becomes a sister node with VP or TP, which in turn explicitly reveals the semantic difference of the two subordinate conjunctive sentences of (2). Contrary to this, the syntactic structure of a coordinate conjunctive sentence is that both a preceding and a following clause belongs to a same layer as shown in (28). In this case there are as many conjunctive phrases as conjoined clauses, and the layer of each conjunctive phrase is one and the same. The status of those clauses also becomes VP or TP, for the author maintain for the present that the two coordinate conjunctive sentences in (1) are semantically different. As a result of our discussion of the third problem never having been fully highlighted, the following has become evident: The multi-tiered subordinate conjunctive sentences of (31) and (32) are seemingly multi-tiered conjunctive sentences on the surface, and they are indeed bi-tiered conjunctive sentences. it is because each phrase is successively conjoined to participate in a larger conjunctive construction. The author especially emphasize that the above conclusion is really a definite evidence of the fact the layer of a preceding sentence cannot but be lower than that of a following sentence in a subordinate sentence. The conjuntivizers(=CONJ) which make multi-tiered subordinate conjunctive sentences seem to have a certain semantically determined order. Even though never making its full aspect lucid in this paper, the author tentatively think that a kind of an order as (36) is reasonable, if seen from linguistic materials in (35) only.
