The 16 mural tombs of Koguryo in North Korea were selected as the UNESCO World Heritage Nomination. It means that the UNESCO has fully acknowledged their high cultural value.
North Korea has made special efforts to conserve the mural tombs of Koguryo as the evidence of the cultural greatness of Koguryo. North Korea made a large investment in the conservation of the mural paintings of Koguryo, but it's efforts seem to be a failure. The environment of the sites changed for the worse due to the excessive equipments and conservation work done without proper study.
The reports of the UNESCO gave a warning that The condition of the mural tombs of the World Heritage Nomination in North Korea would become worse in the future. There is a necessity for international interest and support to study on the conservation and management of the 16 mural tombs of Koguryo and other sites in North Korea.
