This article made a aim to appreciate the historical direction or self-cognition of the Later Paekche in its contemporary days. Later Paekche was a rebirth of Paekche, one of the Three Kingdoms in ancient Korea. But Later Paekche was destroyed by Koryo Dynasty at that time of the extremity of unification of the Later Three Kingdoms by itself. So the original sources related the self-cognition of Later Paekche were extinct entirely. And the intellectuals of the Koryo must have reset and rewritten the whole history of Later Paekche through their own perspectives. It means that first of all we must examine the character and limit of just related documents. Second, it was inevitable to explore the final term of Unified Silla which was a historical base of the rebirth of Later Paekche and forced new unification of separated Later Three Kingdoms. Because I believe that the contemporary conditions and suggested solutions of reality are closely reciprocal. Based on these works, the letter of K yonhwon and enthronement message of Singom were analyzed.
The matter of legitimacy was the most important factor in the historical context of Later Paekche. New unification was a sort of spirit of the times when the Later Three Kingdoms were separated. Kyonhwon, the founder of Later Paekche had pretension to be the leading role in the process of anticipated unification. And be had established ideological legitimacy based on circulating logic of Five Elements. In addition, historical legitimacy based on the relationship between Paekche Dynasty and Mahan was followed at that time when he declare the reconstruction of Paekche officially. Above all, his conception for unification was originated in awakening to historical truth of Three Hans which had been restrained during the Unified Silla days. Historical territory of ancient Korea had been for the first time recovered by him. After all, it is possible to say that Paekche, his dynasty had lead Kyungae, Wangkon and Koryo Dynasty by historical direction, political logic and all of the other essential points.
But the careful and elaborate legitimacy was frail to the contemporary political circumstances which should adapt to extremely changeable reality. Kyonhwon, the founder of Later Paekche as a leader of new unification, could shed a light upon the effort to find some clues for the ways with which the late period of Silla should pursue in the early 10th century. No one else except him was just the embodiment of the historical legitimacy. Therefore, as soon as he decided to join Koryo, the member of Later Paekche had lost their legitimacy and their direction for unification had dispersed. Paradoxically his secession from Paekche had contributed to the unification of Koryo. As a result, the contemporary status of Later Paekche was not only a pioneer dismantling the worn-out political system but a instructer for the establishment of new system.
