Nowadays, crisis caused by ecological problems serves as a warning of the impending possibility of destruction of life on earth. Soil, air and water pollution have become undeniably serious and, moreover, toxicoid problem is threatening life of human beings. With this respect, ecological approaches appears as an alternative to solve these threats. In light of this approach, literary ecology has been applied to examine ecologism.
The purpose of literary ecology was to investigate interrelations between literature and ecology and to find solutions within literatures in order to overco me ecological crises. It is imperative that methods to reach a solution be found, particularly, as the environmental crisis has become one of the most significant issues of the 21st century. In this regard, it is desirable to analyze and derive meanings of ecology from the Korean modern literature. In this study, 49 pieces of novels were analyzed and the result represented four major characteristics in writer's consciousnesses. The motif of these novels were environment or ecological consciousness from the 1970's to 2000's.
First, destruction of personalities were caused by urbanization, advertisements of post capitalism, and human beings' fundamental. deficiencies resulted from the period when mass-consumption arose. For instance, Han Su San's Silence, Lee Nam Hee's Lost way in supermarket are the representative novels. Second, anti-civilization was revealed in writers' conscious-nesses. Nature familization or assimilation occurred as utopia's consciousness. For instance, Jeong Chan's Deep River or Smell of Stars are the representative novels.
Third, crisis was tied with human beings' desire. A representative character in a novel could be found in Han Seung Won's Lotus Flower sea or Han Jeong Hee's Burning Abandoned ship.
Fourth, under the military regime policy, which pursued 1970's modernization and industrialization, excessive economic development was found to be major factor of ecology crisis. For instance, Jeong Do Sang's Winter Flower or Lee Nam Hee's Farewell From The seeare the representative novels. In particular, striking features were found that environmental novel involved accusative characteristics, and main characters were portrayed through activist students for
    the political struggle.
As seen from the above, ecological novel manifests predominant peculiarities of environmental charge from the human being's point of view. It seems important to recognize that environmental matter reached the level of threatening lives on earth. Thus, under the reconciliation of human beings and nature, new development of green literature must be accomplished on a level of deep psychological, social-ecological and eco-feminism as they can cure the ecological crisis.
