The 21st century is the ‘century of environment’. It means that the destruction of ecosystem occurred by the development of civilization has much connection with the human life. It is true because the environmental pollution threatens not only the existence of the biological world but the life of the human being. Now the crisis of environmental pollution is problem not for the specified region or specified social class, but for the whole world. This problem is basically brought about by the humancentrism that consists in the human-centered idea. The humancentered idea now makes the people be concerned about the destruction of the general ecosystem of the earth.
This apprehension makes us feel the necessity of the unitary world view which consists in the harmony between the nature and the human being. Then we have to drop the humancentrism, destructive modality that is adopted inconsciously still now. We can call this new world view, that asks the people to reconsider the modern civilization, the ‘ecological world view’.
In this critical situation of the earth, it is very adequated for the literature to manifest the ecological imagination because the literature points fundamentally to the harmonized relation between the nature and the human being. In that sense, the chilean novelist Luis Sepulveda is a pioneer in the latinamerican narrative world, who has written the works with the theme of environmental crisis.
The aim of this study is to reveal the process of the narrative representation of the environmental crisis and the ecological vision for the construction of a new ecological society through the textual analysis of his three novels: The old man who read love stories, World of the end of the earth and The history of a gull and a cat which taught it to fly. These are his representative works that manifest the profund conflict between the nature and the civilization. Luis Sepulveda, who is a member of Greenpeace, critics fundamentally the human-centered world view existent and insists that we have to change it for a new world view; the ecological world view.
The study leads us to see that Luis Sepulveda has revealed the clear consciousness about the ecosystem and has proposed a deep ecological vision for establish a new society. We can find, through the analysis of his works, a role of the literature for overcome the real problem of a environmental crisis and a ecological order.
