This essay is to suggest two different approaches to understanding the biblical narrative and their application to Bible teaching. The biblical scripture was originally intended to be told in public rather than read individually, while it is often read in modern print culture. This essay has examined a biblical text as a written text to be read and as an oral performance to be heard and seen. The narrative critical approach was adopted for the former, and for the latter the storytelling model and the narrative psychological approach. Mark 5:21-43 was examined as a sample to apply these two approaches.
It has been found that the written text is spatial, and that the reader is controled by visual inputs when s/he reads. The visual inputs are passage arrangement, shape of letters, verbal threads that look the same or similar. The reading of a biblical narrative is done through the interaction between the reader and the text, and the reader narrows gaps between them through the reading process of anticipation and retrospection.
The biblical narrative as an oral performance, on the other hand, is temporal, and it is concerned with phonetic inputs. They are for instance narrative tone, speech tempo, volume and pitch. The storyteller also uses various types of visual inputs such as gestures, which are different from those of the textual reading. In performance, the relationship is made directly between the storyteller and his audiences, and they narrow gaps with the help of the storyteller's manipulation of phonetic inputs.
These different types of approach to understanding the biblical narrative is suggestive to Bible teaching, which can be done either through textual reading or storytelling. Each approaches has its own effectiveness and power that helps the reader/audience understand the message of the biblical story. Regardless of what approach is applied to Bible teaching, the effect can be maximized when the reader/storyteller/audience fully understands the characteristics of each approaches and is able to make use of it in their reading/storytelling.
