The purpose of this paper is to explore a methodology of Korean hermeneutics and Biblical Education. The rhetorical criticism is examined as an alternative interpretative principle because it has common relationships with traditional biblical readings in Korea.
The main problem to start with is to question why there has been no comprehensive study of Korean hermeneutics. We have three reasons: Euro-American centric biblical reading, separation of academia from church, and crisis of self-identity.
Interestingly, traditional Korean readings show a similarity with the Rhetorical Criticism in their integral way of reading the Bible. Three examples of rhetorical readings demonstrate common points between rhetorical criticism and Korean traditional readings. Those biblical texts to be interpreted are Genesis 1:1-2:25, 18:16-33, and 24:10-61.
We have utilized three rhetorical methods of Robert Alter in interpreting the texts. They are "composite artistry", "techniques of repetition", and "type scenes", respectively. The composite artistry can be applied to the Korean literal reading. The technique of repetition should support the pedagogical reading. The theory of the type scenes is open to the inspirational reading.
In conclusion, we can suggest three basic principles for Korean biblical hermeneutics and education. First, the authority of the Scripture should withstand historical critical analyses. The use of composite artistry will uphold integral reading of the Bible. Second, the message from the text should respond the ecclesiastical issues. The sensitivity of the techniques of repetition will help interpreters bring their own problems up for biblical hermeneutics. Third, the Korean methodology should be open to the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. The type scenes method will expose hidden messages and stories from the Text.
If we manage our own Korean hermeneutics and education, it will contribute to the second revival of the Korean Church which has suffered decline in her membership and influence.
