One of the primary tasks of Christian education is to grasp the theological nerve in the Bible that contains conflict and needs adjustment between the Judaic?Christian tradition and the incessantly changing culture in the world. This paper suggests that Job 6:1?7:21 displays a theological nerve by which didactic moments transpire. Finding examples of creating new word phrases, reveals a constructivist way of education in the Old Testament. The effectiveness of Job, the suffering righteous man, when he introduced new words and how he envisioned alternative reality. Job does come up with new phrases that modify his customary understanding of the world and empowers himself to endure hardships. Job is constructing a significant structure of meaning as his sufferings grow in depth.
I have found that Job utilizes four new terms: 1. tasteless food; 2. words of a despairing man are like the wind; 3. Job himself as the sea monster; and 4. God as a watcher of man. With the tasteless food, Job criticizes the presupposed doctrine of retribution and invalidates it. Job's expression of himself as a despairing man with words like the wind is contrasted to the closed epistemological system of his three friends. They are too obstinate to understand Job. The image of a sea monster that Job uses, unfolds Job's revolutionary change of his self. Job does not recognize himself as the symbol of cosmos and prosperity but of chaos and disaster. Above all, divine presence does not indicate a peace, but a turmoil because Job experiences a heartless overseer rather than a graceful Saviour.
Job's sufferings shake the entire structure of his world. Yet, he passed through the chaotic moments of his life through discovering new phrases that take a deep look into and expand his ways of knowing. His faithful reaction to God, whom he cannot understand but still trusts, helps him produce creative structures of new understanding.
