Among the twelve Korean embassies that traveled to Japan during the Tokugawa period, the fourth embassy, that of 1636, which is considered to have signified important changes in the Tokugawa bakufu’s treatment of these guests, when examined in terms of the bearing of transport and other expenses along the route to and from Edo, also was supported by procurement methods that had been instituted for previous embassies. Important changes thus cannot be recognized in how the Japanese government procured material and other items necessary for guiding the embassy through the provinces. Conversely, at the time of this fourth embassy, regarding the analysis that Tsushima domain carefully guided the embassy to Edo while frequently confirming the bakufu’s wishes, the bakufu did not approve all matters. It is true that Tsushima domain guided the embassy while maintaining close contact with the bakufu. However, that does not also mean that the situation proceeded under the bakufu’s leadership.
The 1636 embassy also exhibited new elements in the relations between the two countries, including the use of the designation “Taikun”,the adoption of the Iteian monk rotation system in Tsushima, and the visit to the shrine at Nikko. On the other hand, however, the 1636 embassy also was closely tied to continuities from previous embassies. If the fourth embassy is re-examined through continuities, there emerges the possibility to also re-examine various features that have been widely appraised as changes in the bakufu’s treatment of relations with Choson Korea. This would also include a reevaluation of early modern Japan’s international order, which has been called the “Taikun diplomacy system”.
