Recently in studying fascism has been there on the rise a tendency of highlighting political religion as a major mechanism which led the masses to support their fascist regime. In Franco Regime of Spain National-catholicism, which can be defined as a Spanish essentialism based on Catholicism, has took the place of political religion.
National-catholicism as the vehicle for cultural and political indoctrination from childhood to adulthood espoused the crusade for moral regeneration, the recuperation of Christian ideals and the restoration of the traditional family as the primary social unit of Spanish society. Not only Catholic dogma, but also religious imagery, iconography and rituals shaped the education, culture and cosmovision of all Spaniards throughout their life. It seems that there was the effectiveness in harnessing popular Church cults, such as processions, pilgrimages, fiestas, saints' celebrations, May stations, splendid processions at Corpus and Holy Week, to political interest.
Franco himself made maximum use of religious rituals and imagery, such as the recurrence to the famous arm of Saint Teresa of Avila to enforce his image of authority and divine legitimacy. This paper will make this point clear through analysis of the cult of Saint Teresa under the Franco Regime.
