The narrative verses in ancient China has been in development from the time of 『Shijing(詩經)』 to Yuefu(樂府) poetry of the Han(漢) dynasty. The Chinese narrative verses entered a new phase with the New Yuefu Movement(新樂府運動) led by Bai Juyi(白居易) and Yuan Zhen(元진), along with the flourishing of Seven Character Verses. The Tang(唐) and Five Dynasties(五代) provided a fertile ground for the development of various literatary forms including Ciwen(詞文) literature found at Dunhuang(敦煌).
In this article, I examined the narrative structure of the following four Ciwen(詞文). 〈Ji Bu`s disgrace of the king at the battlefield in the year of the Great Han(大漢三年季布罵陣詞文)〉 elevates readers` aesthetic conciousness by amplifying the story, arranging some turning points from contradictary environment and successfully created characters through different speech styles. 〈Ji Bu`s recital of a poem(季布詩詠)〉 reinforced the compactness of work with the typical plot--the beginning, the middle and the end. 〈Dongyong(董永)〉 has multiple structures, and contains a series of casual relations: 1) between Dongyong`s filial piety and the fairy`s reward, 2) between separation of the couple and reunion of mother and child. 〈All the bird`s names(百鳥名)〉 connected birds and government officials, promoting a comic atmosphere with the element of lengthy rhetoric, personification and ancient totemism.
The Ciwen(詞文) at Dunhuang(敦煌) influenced the late Chinese dramas, especially the genre of the Various Styles with Melody(板式變化體) where music was an important compenent. It also gave birth to the recital form of literature, such as Cihua(詞話), Tanci(彈詞), Guci(鼓詞), Zidishu(子弟書) in the Yuan(元), Ming(明), and Qing(淸) dynasties.
